Anas LAABAB - "Machine Learning Models Resiliency Assessment Against Adversarial Attacks" Master of Science in Cybersecurity and Defense Management (CDM). EM-Lyon Business School, France. Completed, December 2024.
Thesis Summary / Abstract:
The potential of AI, particularly machine learning, has significantly increased its attraction among companies worldwide. An increasing number of businesses are leveraging machine learning to address their operational needs across various sectors such as finance, cybersecurity, and marketing. However, AI-related attacks are also growing in scope, intensity, frequency, and sophistication, with more companies reporting that their AI models have been compromised. While focusing on cybersecurity AI models, previous research has often failed to adequately address the resiliency of these models, especially supervised machine learning models, due to methodological discrepancies. Moreover, adversarial sample generation approaches demonstrated limitations due to being case-specific and lacking human verification of adversarial examples. Furthermore, most studies have emphasized the application of supervised machine learning models in cybersecurity rather than evaluating their resiliency against adversarial attacks. To bridge this gap, this study used the Spanish National Research Council’s CSIC 2010 dataset to analyze the relationship between various data discrepancies and challenges, and their impact on the resiliency of supervised machine learning models. Additionally, the models were tested using a carefully curated set of real-world adversarial examples to produce fair and non-biased outcomes. The assessment highlighted the critical role of data augmentation in enhancing the resiliency of supervised machine learning models against exploitable data discrepancies. Furthermore, the findings underscored the added value of human-centric approach in generating sophisticated adversarial samples, which can further improve model resiliency through adversarial training.

Yu-Ling CHI - "Too Good To Go Case Study: Research on User Experience in France and Business Model Innovation." Master of Science in Digital Marketing & Data Science (DMDS). EM-Lyon Business School, France. Completed, June 2024.
Thesis Summary / Abstract:
Food waste has always been a major issue around the globe. In order to achieve the goal to reduce the amount of food wastage in half by 2030, more and more solutions have been proposed to help alleviate the rising problem. Among all solutions, mobile apps are one of the most common technologies adopted due to their accessibility. Too Good To Go (TGTG), a food waste reducing mobile app, has rescued more than 300 million meals since 2016, making positive impacts environmentally, socially and economically. Despite overall good reputations, the surprise clearance scheme adopted by TGTG is being questioned for increasing food wastage on a consumer level. In light of the mixed perceptions, I am therefore curious about the overall consumer experience in France, currently the biggest market of TGTG. To achieve the research objective to propse a revised TGTG business model, an online survey was distributed through different channels to collect consumer experience in France, and a combined business model innovation(BMI) framework was adopted to better structure the BMI process. Based on the analysis, the result innovative consumer-centric BMI process incorporates (1) optimizing existing features on the mobile app and (2) adding some new value propositions and a new actor in customer segments into the current TGTG business model canvas. Nevertheless, limitations are found in both the online survey and the new business model proposed in this study.

Tobias SEIFERT - "Challenges in Supplier-Buyer Relationships: Barriers to Procurement Savings in Large Germany Enterprises." Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). EM-Lyon Business School, France. Completed, June 2024. A* - level Thesis.
Thesis Abstract /Summary:
This thesis explored existing challenges in supplier-buyer relationships which could disrupt the successful implementation of procurement savings in large German companies, as defined by the OECD as companies with over 250 employees (OECD, 2017). The research was conducted from an external consultant’s perspective. The primary objective of this research was to identify potential issues in supplier-buyer relationships and how these issues could impact the successful implementation of procurement saving programs. The research relied on the insights from real experiences encountered by procurement professionals. The study confirmed the assumption that procurement savings positively impact a company’s performance both financially and operationally. However, the relationship dynamics between a supplier and buyer have a significant impact on the successful implementation of these programs. To better understand, why procurement saving programs were not successful implemented in a company’s procurement function, the research aimed to identify potential barriers. Some of the most frequently issues mentioned throughout the data collection process are inadequate stakeholder management, misaligned communications as well as resistance for changes within the procurement structure. Essentially all these barriers lead to inefficiencies and failed saving initiatives. The recommendations given include establishing long-term, collaborative supplier-buyer relationships with a high level of trust and exchange of information. An organization should set clear goals and a governance on the establishment of such relationships. Apart from that, organizations should leverage digital technology to facilitate stakeholder management and the procurement process in general.

Siphiwe M. SIBANDA - "Use of open source software in the preservation of digital information: a case comparison of two state university libraries." Master of Science in Records & Archives Management (RAM). National University of Science & Technology, ZW. Completed 2018.
Thesis Summary / Abstract:
State university libraries have joined other university libraries in the region and internationally in the creation of digital libraries and institutional repositories (IRs) using Open Source Software (OSS). Despite amassing a growing body of digital collections, they face numerous OSS technical challenges that put at risk the preserved digital information in their digital libraries and IRs. This study sought to investigate the use of OSS in the preservation of digital information in state university libraries. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews, content analysis, and observation from two state university libraries, LSU and NUST, which were conveniently selected, and from 14 purposively selected participants. The study established that state university libraries did not undergo a selection process for OSS for their digital preservation information, resulting in DSpace becoming the default software. The system architecture of DSpace was not well known, and there was limited knowledge on how the system preserved digital objects. The study also revealed that the OSS license subscribed to by the preservation tool was neither well known nor read. International digital preservation standards were also unfamiliar. Upgrading and updating of digital OSS was done periodically, but most of the hardware in the libraries was very old and needed upgrading. There was a lack of training, especially for junior staff members in the IR system. Only systems specialists in state university libraries participated in OSS communities. It was recommended that state university libraries should undergo a selection process for OSS digital preservation tools. Systems specialists and IR managers should study and understand the type of license their OSS subscribes to, including its terms and conditions. Senior management should prioritize training and refresher courses for junior staff members involved in IR and digital preservation. Additionally, senior management should allocate time for developers and other technical personnel to participate in OSS communities, thus benefiting from having their own contributors who can implement potential changes in OSS projects.
